    The constitution of the United States of America goes into effect. This replaces the Articles of Confederation.

    Naturalization Law of 1790 goes into effect, these are the first set of laws granting National Citizenship. It was extremely limited to immigrants who were "free white persons" of good moral character. This left out all immigrants who were of any other race other than "White".

    The discovery of gold in Sacramento, California was bound to attract many immigrants because now there would be jobs available not only limited to the white man.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    This ends the war between Mexico and America, giving citizenship to about 80,000 mexicans living in the American Southwest.
  • 1864 Immigration Act

    This established the position of The Commissioner of Immigration, reporting to the secretary of state.

    This expanded citizenship to African-Americans, this still leaves out Asians. The Fifteenth amendment was also changed now allowing people of all races who were citizens to vote.

    U.S congress passed an act that stated .50cents would be levied on every immigrant to land in United States ports. This now allowed authorities to deny anyone access. Mostly convicts, and lunatics. The money was used to help care for the immigrants after coming into the U.S.

    Act stating that citizens must now know some of the English language and establishes the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization.

    Act of 1917 did not allow "undseriables" from other countries to earn a living in the United States, also restricts immigrants from Asia by forming an "Asiatic Barred Zone".

    Any alien over the age of 14 must now be fingerprinted and registered in the United States.

    Employers were now required to check the citizenship of their employees. It was now illegal to hire someone knowing they were not a citizen, this allowed about 3 million illegal immigrants to be granted citizenship.
