The Dead Rabbits Riot
The Dead Rabbits planned to raid the Bowery Boys clubhouse but before they could raid it they intervened outside but the police failed to showed up. The next day the Dead Rabbits attacked the Bowery Boys hangout "Green Dragon." The Bowery Boys called the police but it didn't do much. More and more people intervened and eventually it turned into a riot. -
The Ku Klux Klan is Established
The KKK grew from a secret social group to an unofficial force bent on reversing the federal government’s progressive "Reconstruction era activities in the South", especially policies that elevated the rights of the local Black population. KKK engaged in terrorist raids against African Americans and white republicans at night, employing intimidation, destruction of property, assault, and murder to achieve its aims and influence upcoming elections. -
John D. Rockefeller Creates Standard Oil
Rockefeller borrowed money to buy out some of his partners and take control of the refinery over the next few years, he acquired new partners and grew his business interests in the growing oil industry. Standard Oil gained a monopoly in the oil industry by buying rival refineries and developing companies for distributing and marketing its products around the globe. These companies were combined into the Standard Oil Trust, which would control some 90% of the nation’s refineries/pipelines. -
Alexander Graham Bell Patents the Telephone
Bell started working on the harmonic telegraph which is a device that allowed multiple messages to be transmitted over a wire at the same time. While trying to perfect this technology, Bell became preoccupied with finding a way to transmit the human voice over wires. With the help of his partner Thomas Watson, they had come up with a simple receiver that could turn electricity into sound. -
