    Our Immigrant Ancestors

When people in different countries want to fullfill their American dreams they must leave their homelands for the chance at a better life. Here are a few stories of people who made their dreams happen and brought our lineage to the country we all live in today.
  • Rosendo Gutierez Comes to America

    Rosendo Gutierez Comes to America
Rosendo Gutierrez lived in a small province in the Philippines until he enlisted in the military in 1935. He wanted to escape the extreme poverty of his small town, and the military gave him the opportunity to study to become an engineer. He was stationed in Mabalacat where he was taken prisoner of war by the Japanese. He was one of the lucky few to escape before marrying my grandmother in 1942. He was finally stationed in Torrance California in 1960 and his family joined him in 1964.

    Maria Ramos
On July 7, 1990, Maria Ramos came to America. She had come from the Philippines to San Francisco, California on a Student visa passport. She studied for her Masters of Arts degree, supporting herself by working three jobs. As part of her studies, she had to complete an internship. She enjoyed her work, so she applied for and was granted a work visa in 1992. In 2001, Maria applied for citizenship and later took her Oath of Citizenship in Sacramento.

  • Loretta Da Silva

    Loretta Da Silva
My mom, Loretta Da Silva, was born on May 28, 1958 in Macau, China. Her family wanted a better education and more opportunities. My mother’s Auntie lived in America already; she was able to sponsor them into America. Her family applied for Green cards, but had to wait 3 years for approval. Once they came to America, my mom shared a small room with her 5 sisters, and had to get a job.
  • Elisa Sarceño Lopez

    Elisa Sarceño Lopez
My ancestor was my mother, Elisa Sarceño Lopez. She came in the year 1988. She was around the age of 19 and had always wanted a better education than the one she was getting in Guatemala. So she had signed up for a student exchange program and was accepted in. She had left what she had always known in Guatemala, to come and get an education. She spent 2 years in a university in Oklahoma.
