  • Ego Integrity vs. Despair

George and Margaret have been married for 50 years. As they reflect on their lives raising children, building careers and overcoming financial struggles, They feel proud and enjoy volunteering, traveling and telling stories to their grandchildren. They feel a deep sense of peace and satisfaction, however, they also spend many days feeling alone and talk about missed opportunities, estranged family relationships, and a lack of purpose now that they have retired. They often feel despair.
  • Identity vs. Role Confusion

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A leader in the Civil Rights Movement, was tragically assassinated. This led to an identity crisis in the youth (ages 12-18). They were left with questions of who they were and what role they could play in a world that seemed hostile and uncertain at the time. The youth were forced to face complexities of their identity, especially in the context of social and political upheaval. They were unsure of how to proceed with their aspirations for peace and equality.
  • Industry vs. Inferiority

Neil Armstrong (age 38) became the first human to walk on the moon. Many children (ages 7-11) were inspired by Armstrong's achievements, dreaming of becoming astronauts or scientists. They saw what could be accomplished through hard work. Early childhood, for instance, are very susceptible to this achievement, However, for some that struggled in school or felt that they were behind in academic or social settings, were left feeling inferior and had a internal crisis of self doubt and inadequacy.
