A Miracle
Ellie was excited about going to labor camps because in the ghetto their food supply was getting low. Little did she know that the labor camp was going to be a lot worse than the ghetto. "I'm glad they are taking us to labor camps." -
My Poems
In the Ghetto the guards were ordering everyone to bring their books and anything on paper to the yard and put it in this big pile. After everyone brought their books and everything the guards set everything in the pile on fire. "Can I keep my poems please?" -
Aunt Serena
They were ordered to pack up their bags for the labor camp. Everyone in the family packs their bags with as much stuff as they can carry. "You cannot carry all that. It's more than a hundred pounds. It'll break your back." -
Auschwitz
During the middle of the night the guards ordered the girls to get on the wagons. They were then taken to the train and from there they were taken to Auschwitz. "Schnell! 'Raus! Alles 'Raus!" -
Arbeit Macht Frei
They were taken to an empty room and had to take off all of their clothes. Then they were shaved bald, when Ellie went outside she found her mom and she didn't recognize her. "Ellie! It's you! You look just like Bubi. Strange, I've never seen the resemblance." -
The Riot
It was the first night in Auschwitz and during the middle of the night a riot occured. A little girl that was having a nightmare was the couse of it. She wouldn't calm down after the guards warned her so the took her out of the room and shot her. "Back on the floor! Lie down and don't move!, Or you'll be shot!" -
Mommy, There's A Worm In Your Soup
It was noon and they were given their warm cooked meal for the day. Ellie looked down at her soup and realized that there were hundreds of worms in it. She tells her mom and she gets mad at her. "Nonsense! Theses are not worms. Eat, and leave me alone." -
The Broken Bed
During the day they were eating lunch on the bunk beds. The bunk bed that Ellie and her mom were sitting on broke because of the girls above them. The girls were still sitting on the bed when it broke and Ellie yeld at them to get off while she tried to dig her mom out from underneath the bed. When she finally got her mom out she couldn't move. "Get off! Get off this instant! There's someome underneath you. You're crushing her to death!" -
Tattoo
They were ordered to march but Ellie's mom was unable to do so. She finally got to her feet and while they were walking, a guard on a motorcycle drove up beside the row they were in. The guard reached out with his stick and asked Mrs. Friedman if she was able to work. She said yes and the guard drove off. "Hey, Grandma, can you still work?" -
The Selection
Ellie was asking some of the other girls to risk their life to try and help ellie get her mom out of the infirmary. They agreed to help her. The guards were going to take her to the gas chamber if they didn't get her out that day. The girks barely got her out just in the nick of time. "I'm asking you to risk your life."
