How women's fashion has changed from 1860-1900

    in 1860 Women's outfits consisted of gowns with extremely full skirts that had a bell look to them. To hold up these massive skirts women used crinolines and hoops that would make the dress appear fuller as the fuller your dress was the prettier it was said to be. Mauveine dyes were used to dye the fabric of the gown to the right shade. The popular gown coulors in 1860 were mauve and bright purples.

    This particular year in fashion the silhouettes of women's dresses changed. Unlike in the 1860's were women went to extremes to make there dress fuller. Now many women flattened there gowns in the front and only made the back of there gown full. The back of there gowns were made large and heavily decorated with all assortments of decorations like stripes and puffs. Many women also had there dresses made up of lace. Women also had there dresses decorated with silver or gold embellishments.

    A woman's day in 1861 consisted of many gown changes. A wealthy woman could afford to change her gown a minimum of twice a day. A woman would start her day wearing what was called a day gown. This gown had wide short sleeves worn over long under sleeves and had a high neckline with a tatted or laced collar. Then towards the end of the day, a woman would make her second gown change into an evening gown. This gown had a low neckline, short sleeves and was worn with fingerless gloves.

    in 1860 many women wore there hair in a style refered to as nets. They also wore there hats slanted forward covering there forehead. This was known as the typical American hairstyle as many women wore there hair this way.This hairstyle became very popular amoung women thorough out 1860's. As for women's gowns many of them were constructed out of satin. Many of the dresses were also trimmed with lace or silk satin.

    Women's gowns had a high waists. This style of gown was known as a draped style and was worn with an underskirt or knee a length jacket. These gowns had long fitted sleeves and were often worn with short gloves.

    This year in fashion the style kwon as the bustle made its comeback. The silhouettes became very full. The dresses had wide shoulders and low, tiny waists with a full skirt. The back of this fm dress was balanced out by a fuller lower chest and a corset.
  • 1870

    Draped skirts were very popular amongst women in this year. Women wore their hair pulled back in a high bun with many dangling ringlets on either side of the bun. Bangs covering the forehead were also on style.
