John Wilson was pulled in by the propaganda for Europeans to sail over to western Canada. In July of 1912, John left his son and 6 month pregnant wife Polly to prepare for their later arrival to the west. he departed in Liverpool on a steam boat to Halifax which he then took the CPR to Saskatoon.

John Wilson struggles to keep a job first as a bridge builder then later as a gardener. Housing also skyrocketed in price. but he managed to find a rooming house to live in.

Two weeks after being rejected by the military. John tries to join the RNWMP and gets accepted due to the Mounties being desperate for recruits because of the war.

After almost a year of training, John Wilson has become a full fledged Mountie. He was deployed in Blaine Lake where he was in charge of keeping peace in the town as well as handing a group of Dukobors in the area. While there he made friends with the Patterson family, also becoming fond of the sixteen year old daughter, Jessie, that lived there.

John is infected with TB and is discharged from the RNWMP. Jessie nurses John until he felt better.

People clean their houses and wait for the first person to walk in the house and depending on their hair color determines your luck. The Hutchison's house have a red haired person as the first footing which is bad luck.

John forges two letters regarding the death of John's sister who is still alive. In the letter he lies about lots of things regarding the health of his family and how amazing John is.

Polly Hutchison, worried for her husband, decides to go to Canada on the Mauretania

From June 18th to September 15th 1918. John and Jessie keep in contact with each other through letters.

While John was out of the home, Polly found a letter from Jessie about them getting married. Polly is baffled with this and decides to confront John about this when John is drinking and having fun with his co-workers. John just shrugs it off and pretends that Polly isn't there. When John gets home, they discuss about what happened. John claims that he was trying to break it off with her and that he will tell her that they are not getting married. Polly believes John.

John goes to Wheatly's Jewellery store to get a marriage license in preparation for his and Jessie's wedding. John lies to the clerk about many aspects including that he is a bachelor.

Polly and John decide to move to Saskatoon, But before they go to the house, John says they have business in Rosthern so they start to drive over in the grey dort.

John pulls out his double barrel shotgun to shoot geese flying over. When the geese were gone and it was dark enough. John turns and points the gun at Polly and shoots her in the head as she screams in terror. Here head was blown to pieces covering the dort and John himself. Looking sick, John carries the headless body to a culvert in order to bury it under the culvert.

John Wilson after no sleep wanders to the nearest house he could find to tell them he drove over a culvert and destroyed his car. When asked what happened he gives different stories to different people.

John takes a ride with the family that helped him with his car, the Neufeldt's. While going there, John is questioned by the children different questions like what the bloodstain on the trunk was from. Or why he always carried a shovel and shotgun.
