  • Excecutive Order 9980

    Excecutive Order 9980
Intent: Truman signed an Excecutive Order that allowed all eligible people to vote without being discriminated against because of race, colour, religion, or national origin. Outcome: Having this order issued only made the Southerners more angry. This caused them to get organized and start clans such as the KKK to scare African Americans out of voting. They also used scare tactics to teach African Americans a lesson or were just punished because Southerners wanted to punish them.
  • Integration of Schools

    Integration of Schools
Intent: The NAACP went to court to fight the segregation of schools because the NAACP found the education and segregation laws to be unequal. This caused the Supreme Court to find it unconstitutional for the schools to be segregated. Outcome: The schools were integregated. Although the purpose was to teach the races to co-exist with each other it only made the whites even more angry to have to share a school. Parents pulled their children out of school, and some children were beaten.
  • Bus segregation

    Bus segregation
Intent: The NAACP was trying to fight the segregation of the public transport sysytem. Outcome: Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat at the front of the bus when negros were supposed to sit at the back of the bus. The NCAAP decided to stop traveling on the busses until they were integregated. After a while busses were integregated because they were running out of bussiness without having negros on the busses.
  • Sit-ins

    Sit-ins
Intent: The NAACP began with sit-ins at segregated restaurant and other facilities to get them to become integrated. Outcome: Because the NACCP was a non-violent organization Southerners took advantage. When negros participated in sit-ins they would often be beaten, egged, imprisoned, spit on amongst other things. Although all of this was happening to negros they got up and sat down again and just waited to be served. However, they were not served until segregation had ended.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
Intent: The NAACP and SNCC wanted to show Southerners that races could co-exist peacefully by putting Negros and Whites on a bus together and travelling. Outcome: Freedom riders were often attacked. One instance was recorded in which Southerners bombed a bus. they would also beat Negros and White Freedom Riders. Southerners went to any extent necessary to stop integration.
  • First Negro Admitted into University

    First Negro Admitted into University
Intent: James Meredith was the first Negro to be admitted into a University. The intent was to show that integration was possible at school. Outcome: James having been admitted caused a huge uproar. Violence began to boom at the school. Having heard the news President Kennedy sent 5,000 troops to protect Negros.
  • March to Washington

    March to Washington
Intent: The purpose of the march to Washington was to show that Negros were supported by Whites in their fight for equality. Also, to show that there was more Negros fighting for their rights than Southerners had imagined. Outcome: This march did not make hte Southerners view Negros differently. However, the march received huge media support. It was telecasted all over the nation in which Martin Luther King delivered his "I have a Dream" speech.
  • Missing Civil Right Workers Found

    Missing Civil Right Workers Found
Intent: The purpose was simply to find the 3 Civil Right Workers (2 White, 1 Negro) and bring their murderes to justice. Outcome: The 3 men had been murdered by the KKK. Some members received federal charges but none were charged with murder. If they had been charged with murder it would have been a state charge and the men would not have received any punishment. This is because Mississipi's court believes in segregation.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Voting Rights Act of 1965
Intent: The purpose was to make it possible and easier for Negros to vote. This act made poll taxes and literacy test requirement an illegal act. Outcome: More Negros began to vote. However, Southerners were not as receptive to this new act and tried to find new ways into scring Negros out of voting.
  • Martin Luther King Dies

    Martin Luther King Dies
Intent: His death was not to tear the cause appart because he could no longer lead the cause. His death was to cause people to want to join in and help the cause. Outcome: More Negros and Whites joined the cause when they saw all the effort that was put into this non-violent campaign. However, after a little while some Negros did become violent. Martin Luther King wanted Negros to be viewed as the victims not the aggresors
