Brown vs Board of Education in 1954, the supreme court ruled that school segregation by race was not constitutional. This was one of the first times the federal government advocated for students who experiences inequality and prejudice at school and set parth for individuals with disabilities.

The Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 also known as the ADA extended civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities in all areas of life including school. This means equal access to education, and making sure schools provided accommodations for students with disabilities in general education settings.

No child left Behind Act in 2001 was signed by President George W. BUsh which was aimed to improve student achievement by increasing accountability for schools. It needed standardized testing and set performance targets for schools to do good in order to receive federal funding. This law ended up shaping discussion on educational standards.
