History of Special Education

  • NCSU College of Education Founded

    Approximately 50 years after NCSU was established, the NC State College of Education was founded. It would be nearly 100 years till I would attend NC State.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    This ruling set a precedent for providing equal treatment for all students, regardless of their racial background. While it did not specify anything for special education, it was the first to acknowledge that students should be treated equal in the classroom.
  • Time Out-Dave Brubeck

    The foundational "cool jazz" album is released. The single Take Five is considered a classic jazz piece today.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965

    This provided states with the funds to support special education classrooms and teachers. States could use the money freely, and was focused on equalizing education for all students.
  • Woodstock 1969

    This was the largest music festival anyone had seen at the time. The gathering was the final culmination of the 1960s music scene.
  • Parc and Mills Supreme Court Cases

    Parc vs Pennsylvania ended exclusion of mentally ill students from the classroom. Mills got rid of the excuse that educating disabled students was too much of a cost burden on schools. It is simply unreasonable to exclude students based on monetary motions.
  • Public Law 94-142

    This four part law required states to provide a free and adequate education, as well as personalized help from the state for families with disabled students. The federal government also established a set of checks to make sure that states were actually meeting the requirements set by the law.
  • Star Wars Released

    One of the best movies of all time, Star Wars: A New Hope is released.
  • Autism and Brain Injuries added to the IDEA

    The EHA was changed to the IDEA law. Post-education plans for students were added as an importance, leading to IEPs and ITPs. This helps students progress towards adulthood and eventually the working life.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    This act established the rigorous testing standards that all students must reach for. This was seen as quite a challenge for IDEA standards and the special education teachers at the time.
  • War in Afghanistan Begins

    The war that has just ended, began around this year. It was the longest war the US had participated in.
  • IDEA revised for NCLB

    The IDEA was matched to the NCLB standards, requiring states to have testing requirements that correlated to the needs of disabled students. Special education teachers were required to submit progress reports and various other statistics of their classroom to show improvement.
  • ESEA replaces NCLB

    After numerous complaints regarding the accountability standards and need for very highly qualified teachers, the NCLB act was replaced by the ESEA.
