    The first Special education school in the United States was established in Hartford, Connecticut by Gallaudet. It was once called the American Asylum for the education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb. Now it’s called the American School for the Deaf.

    Is an organization that was founded in the 1950’s by parents of people with developmental disabilities. This organization is committed to altering perceptions of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.     Department Of Public Welfare V. Haas
    The supreme court of Illinois maintained that the state’s education laws did not require a free education to children who were mentally deficient and who have limited intelligence and were unable to reap the benefits of a good education.
  • Rehabilitation Act of 1973

    Rehabilitation Act of 1973
    Helped guarantee civil rights to all disabled people and required accommodations for disabled students in schools. This act does not allow discrimination against people with disabilities programs that receive federal financial assistance. In addition, the rehab act of 1973 guarantees equal access to educational programs and activities for students with disabilities.

    Education for all Handicapped Children Act
    Enforced the right of children with disabilities to receive appropriate and free education. This act also helps ensure that all special education services are available to children that need them. As well as providing federal funding to help states educate students with disabilities.Also known as EHA.

    National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities
    Is a national committee that represents organizations that commit to the welfare of individuals with learning disabilities. By representing 11 organizations. They act as an advocate and make recommendations on key issues affecting individuals who have learning disabilities.

    Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments
    This act requires all states to extend free and appropriate education for children between the ages of 3-5 years old with disabilities. Also establishing early interventions program with infants and toddlers ages birth to 2 years old.

    IDEA, was a positive step in special education. It helped the use of individual education plans, or IEP for special education students. This act guaranteed that all students would have an equal education opportunity. As well as individualized attention to what each student needed.   • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    In 2002, the No Child Left Behind Act was signed by President George W. Bush. This law has become a bit controversial because the NCLB has been seen as both negative and positive. This law requires all student to be proficient in reading and math, and depending how the school/ district does is how much funding they will receive.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act
    Allows districts to use a (RTI) response-to-intervention model for determining whether a child has a learning disability. This also allowed for a student that did not have a severe discrepancy between achievement and intellectual ability to qualify for RTI.
