    Joanna Drayton, a young white woman, met Dr. John Prentice, a young black physician while visiting Hawaii. The movie focuses on her return home, bringing her new fiance to dinner. Her family is very uncomfortable with him around, even though they taught their daughter to be accepting of other racial groups.

They introduce her to the owner of a record shop that hosts the monthly "Negro Day" on The Corny Collins Show.
