    This act prohibited discrimination against any student or faculty member, allowing for equal opportunities for each student. This act was significant to the improvement of multicultural education because in the 1970s, people of color were still not granted the same opportunities as white people.

    University of Phoenix Establishes "Online Campus"
    When University of Phoenix introducing an online campus, the college experience was changed forever. The lives of many improved because they were allowed the convenience of earning an education in the comfort of their own home. Multicultural education was shaped, as students with less of an opportunity to attend college were able to enroll online and earn degrees without the additional costs of housing and transportation.

    The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1990
    The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1990 brought reform for the first time since 1965. Multicultural education was shaped since this act, as it allowed for immigration to bring more diversity to schools. Annual immigration was increased to 700,000.
  • Proposition 187

    Proposition 187
    Proposition 187 was introduced to passed in California as a result of illegal immigration. Public education was denied to undocumented persons of California, creating a huge setback for multicultural education in California.
  • Proposition 227

    Proposition 227
    The passing of Proposition 227 in California required for all instruction at public schools be taught in English. This was a setback for multicultural education in California, as most students did not speak English and were taught to assimilate to the dominant culture.
  • The Higher Education Act

    The Higher Education Act
    The Higher Education Act of 1998 allowed for students' feedback about their teachers to be brought to light. This shaped multicultural education in that if a student was treated differently from others because of their culture, it would not go unnoticed.
  • Virginia Tech Massacre

    Virginia Tech Massacre
    The Virginia Tech Massacre of 2007 changed safety in schools forever. Many more precautions were taken at schools throughout the country after this horrifying event. This changed multicultural education immensely because it shed light on hate crimes and the cruelty of some students towards others.
