History of Multicultural Education

  • The first bilingual and bi-cultural public school in the United States is opened.

    The first bilingual and bi-cultural public school in the United States is opened.
    Originally Coral Way Elementary Schools bi-cultural/bilingual class was supposed to be temporary. But to this day, the school remains running this program. This class paved the way for more classes of the same type and similarity to open all over the United States. Becoming a normal part of most if not every United States school curriculum.   • Project Head Start

    Project Head Start
    This project was designed to help meet the needs of disadvantaged preschool students. It was designed to help these kids both economically, in ways to improve health, nutrition and more. It was designed to make sure all children where given the same start preventing cultural biases, stereotypes etc.

    Immigration Act of 1965/Hart-Cellar Act
    This act changed the amount and kind of people allowed into the United States, dramatically changing our culture. This is because those who immigrated would influence those already in the states by exposing them to new cultures and ways of thinking.

    The Bilingual Education Act
    This Act recognized that children who spoke little to no English and created programs in order to help these people. It created equal opportunity education and in this way changed the educational culture of the United States.

  • Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm

    Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm
    Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm was the first African American woman ever to serve in to House Rules Committee and the second female to ever have that honor. In addition to this, she was the first African American woman to serve in Congress. Her success and presence in these areas would have changed the way women, and more specifically, African American women here treated.

    This act recognized that Native Americans had unique cultural and academic needs. It essentially state the the Federal Government has responsibility with the education of these people.   • Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972

    Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972
    This amendment made huge changes in culture by preventing the discrimination of women in sports. It also prevented the usage of federal funding in ways that would discriminate the sexes. Without this amendment it is my belief that women would still be fighting to be equal with men.

    The National Association of Bilingual Education is founded.

  • The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1990

    The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1990
    This act created a kind of lottery system allowing for more diversity in the immigrants who came to the states. This influx of people into the states would change the current multi-cultural/bilingual classes in the United States. Changes like these, however small would create drastic changes overtime.
