    In 1901 Edwin S. Porter showed that film editing did not have to be one long shot. He also used footage to tell a different story in what the original footage was meant to portray. Poter's film The Great Train Robbery is one of his most famous films created in 1903 using these techniques

    In 1920 the Soviet director Lev Kuleshov discovered the use of montage in films and he also created the first ever montage in a film. This become known as the Kuleshov effect .It was taken up and further enhanced by difectors such as Elsenteins and Diziga Vertov in films such as Battleship Potemkin (1925) and Man with a Moving Camera (1929)

    As film editing developed with montages, close ups, different camera angles, use of music and rhytm and speed, some directors went back to shots of long duration. In the 1930's Jean Renoirs films included many shots of long duration. A famous long shot is the opening sequence to Orson Wells film Touch of Evil. (1958)
