    Eadweard Muybridge & his friends made a bet to see if horses could take all 4 of their hooves off the ground at the same time. To do this, they took multiple pictures of the horse running. When they flipped through all of the pictures really fast, they realized that it looked like the horse was actually running.

    George Eastman invents paper film. Before paper film, film was made out of glass. Paper film was better because it could be rolled up, so there was no more need for glass plates.
  • First Screening of a Movie

    The Lumière brothers create a projector called the Cinématograph. They host a private screening of a movie. Thomas Edison invented the projector, but he refused to let people screen movies on it.

    Harry Davis & John P. started the first ever movie theater. It was in Pittsburgh, Penn & it was called the Nickelodeon. The children's TV channel was named after it.

    Around this time, film was getting very popular & it was gaining a huge fanbase. J. Stuart Blackton created a magazine called Photoplay. It was a magazine all about films, made for film fans.

    The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, were created. They gave out film awards for things like Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor/Actress, etc.The film Wings won best picture that year.
  • Colored Films

    Colored films finally started getting popular. Films like The Wizard of Oz & Gone with the Wind came out. Unlike most films from their time, these were not in black & white, but were instead colorful & vibrant.

    The movie House of Wax becomes the first 3D movie in color. The first 3D movie of all time, however, was Power of Love. It came out in 1922.

    Movies begin having a rating system. This lets the viewers know how mature the movie they're watching is. It also restricts minors of certain ages from watch movies of certain ratings.

    The VCR was invented in Japan, & eventually became extremely popular, especially in the US. They allowed viewers to watch movies at home, anytime they wanted. This angered a lot of filmmakers, until they realized that it was like a second revenue after a movie went out of theaters.

    Movies were starting to transition from film to digital. As this happened, DVDs came into order. They were a digital way to watch a movie at home, as opposed to watching it on a VCR with a VHS tape filled with film.
  • Avengers: Endgame

    Superhero movies are starting to get more & more popular, since their debut in 1951 with Superman and the Mole Men. Avengers: Endgame is the highest grossing film of all time, beating Avatar which held the record since 2009. Endgame has made $2.79 billion.
