  • Plessy V Ferguson

    Plessy V Ferguson
This ruling established that in the state of Louisiana it was acceptable for blacks and whites to be taught at different schools as long as the education the students was receiving was "equal".
  • Brown V Board of Education

    Brown V Board of Education
This ruling declared that racial segregation of students in public schools went against the 14th amendment. The supreme court unanimously voted that segregated schools could not be “separate but equal." This was a landmark decision in The United States for education, as it allowed students of all race to attend school together, shaping education forever.
  • Head Start Program

    Head Start Program
The Head Start Program was created to help preschool children that came from low-income families by providing them with a program that can provide for all of their needs, be it emotional, social, health, etc. needs. This is crucial as every student deserves the access to resources that can help them through whatever it is they are going through, no matter how much money their families make.
  • Title IX

    Title IX
This ruling declared that no person can be excluded from school programs based on their sex, which opened up numerous oportnities for women to play sports which they were not previously allowed to do.
  • Milliken v. Bradley

    Milliken v. Bradley
The supreme court rules that schools may not be desegregated across all districts. This segregates students of color in inner-city districts from attending wealthier schools in other districts. This shaped education as it managed to take away the educational rights of non-whites in America.
  • Individuals with disabilities Education Act

    Individuals with disabilities Education Act
This law allows a free appropriate public education to children with disabilities, providing special education to those students. This act not only provided students a specialised education, but also provided the students and their families information on resources that they may need to help them with their special needs. This is crucial to the future of education, as all students deserve an education no matter what disabilities they may have.
  • Standards Movement

    Standards Movement
This movement emphasized the importance of setting standards for your students. It helped teachers determine what students should know based on their current grade level. This is important as it helped guide teachers to know what to teach their students based on where their students should be in their education at a certain point in time.
  • Proposition 187

    Proposition 187
This proposition made it illegal for students of undocumented immigrants to attend public schools in the state of California. This is a major set back that shapes education, as it stopped children from receiving education based on where their families were from. All students deserve an education, and for these students to not receive an education based on their families origin is absolutely absurd.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
The No Child Left Behind Act called for yearly standardised assessments of students with the hope that it would show students' success. Standardised assessments shaped education, as similarly to the standards movement, it allows teachers to know what they should be teaching their students based on what they will be tested on.
  • Kitzmiller v Dover

    Kitzmiller v Dover
This case ruled that the teaching of “scientific design” (which states that God created the earth and life itself) is not scientific and violates the Establishment Clause of the US Constitution. This was a big case in the separation of church and state.
