  • The Massachusetts Law of 1647

    The Massachusetts Law of 1647
    The Massachusetts Law of 1647, otherwise known as the Old Deluder Satan Act, required all town with more than fifty families to have a public school house where children were able to go and learn about grammar and religion.
  • The American English Academy

    The American English Academy
    Benjamin Franklin establishes the American English Academy, which helped expand class options in curricula. The Academy was the first to offer science, mythology, theory, etc.
  • Massachusetts State Board of Education

    Massachusetts State Board of Education
    Horace Mann establishes the first State Board of Education in Massachusetts. The purpose of the board is to survey all school districts and establish proper training for teachers. They also raised money to increase education programs and schools.
  • First Kindergarten

    First Kindergarten
    The first Kindergarten is started in Watertown, WI by M. Schurz, in attempt to prepare young children for primary education. Many schools followed suit, but it was not unitl four years after that the first official kindergarten opened in Boston, MA.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    After a unianimous Supreme Court ruling, Segregation is banned in AMerican public schools. This was a huge step in the Civil Rights Movement of the 20th century.
  • Project Headstart

    Headstart opens their doors for low income families wishing to enroll their children in preschool.
  • The Rehabilitation Act

    The Rehabilitation Act
    The rehabilitation Act becomes a law and includes Section 504. This particular section gurantees civil treatment for any and all people with disabilities in the context of federally funded institutions. It also requires accomadations in schools including participation in programs and activites, as well as, access to all facilities.
  • Plyer v. Doe

    Plyer v. Doe
    The supreme Court case of Plyer v. Doe, serves the ruling that says denying education for undocumented children violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment, and simply will not be tolerated.

    The Bush Administration intiates No Child Left Behind in hopes to raise standards for education, by administering standardized testing as a form of assessment. There continues to be a great deal of controversy that surrounds this topic.
