  • Massachusets Law of 1642

    Massachusets passed a law in 1642. This law required that certain men went around to homesto make sure that parents or masters were providing educatin for their children. They were also required to see what they were being taught.
  • Websters Dictionary

    Webster published a dictionary which defined many words. He also changed the spelling of many words, many how we spell and say today.
  • Secondary Schools

    The first secondary school for boys was openedin 1821. This became so popular that girls wanted to attend. In 1824, they opened a secondary school for girls, which close only three years later.
  • Normal Schools

    Horace Mann created normal schoolsin 1837. This was a teacher trainging school. Many teachers would attend in hopes of passing the test to be deamed a good teacher.

    Horace Mann**
    Horace man, known as the "Father of American Education", gave up his career as a legislator to become the State Board of Education's secretary. He was a major supporter for public education. He was a great influence on teacher training schools. He did not introduce the idea, but was a huge supporter of the first Normal Schools in Massachusetts.
  • Committee of Ten**

    Committee of Ten**
    The Committee of Ten was organized to create standardized education. Headed by Charles Eliot, they worked to have all students headed in the right direction with their education. They helped shape the way secondary schools run today.
  • John Dewey

    John Dewey is said to be "the real spokesman for intellecutal america in the progressive era." Dewey leaned toward the child-centered education. He wanted children to learn by doing, instead of note taking.
  • The Great Depression

    During the great depression,many schools were forced to close down. In schools that were still operating, many students were asked to bring their own supplies, and in some circumstances,were asked to pay tuition.
  • World War II

    During WWII, many students and teachers, left to go fight in the war. Enrollment rates dropped significantly. In 1941 there were 6.7 million students enrolled. Compared to 1944, there were 5.5 million.
  • Brown Vs. Board of Education**

    Brown Vs. Board of Education**
    Before this court case, whites and blacks attended separate schools. It was said that the schools were "separate but equal". This was not the case. Many of the schools for black students lacked suplies, teachers, and many time mainentenceof the building. This court ruling made it possible for black students to attendthe same school as whites.
  • National Defense Education Act

    This law was passed to give direct federal funding to math, science, and foreign language programs. This was caused because of the Cold War. The U.S was feeling pressure because we had a shortage in trained teachers, engineers and students.
  • Bilingual Educational Act of 1974

    Schools were not required to offer special language courses for students who did not speak english. Federal funding was granted to provide these programs.
  • Individuals with Disabilites Education Act**

    Individuals with Disabilites Education Act**
    This act would ensure that ALL students with an identifiable disability would also receive a free education. This also ensured that the students rights, and the families rights would be protected.This improved the lives of children with disabilities. This opened up so many doors to them. Life got a little bit easier for them and their parents.
  • School Choice

    Parents were not allowed to select a school they wanted their child to attend. The government hoped that this would push schools to do their best and create a little bit of competition in school in the same community.
  • No Child Left Behind**

    No Child Left Behind**
    Required under this act, all states would provide standards that students should know at the end of the year. Students would be given an end of year assessment. If they do not give this assessment, schools will not be funded for the upcoming year.
