  • Education in the Colonial Period

    In the colonial period children who were in the upper class received an education. School prepared children to work in the plantation.
  • Jefferson, Rush, & Webster

    Benamin Rush pushed for a system of free schools. Noah Webster created the Webster Spelling Book. Thomas Jefferson was spokesperson for public schools.
  • Secondary School Movement

    This movement offered education beyond elementary school.
  • HORACE MANN!

    HORACE MANN!
    "Father of American Education." Mann increased pubic support for education and public awareness of the problems that education was facing. Mann was concerned about the status of the teaching profession and the training of teachers. Mann believed that education was a right for every child.   • Population Growth and Immigration in the 19th century

    Millions of new families immigrated to America from Ireland, Germany, and southern Europe. As America was growing it became very urban.
  • Committee of Ten

    The committee of ten worked to standardize America's high school curriculum.
  • The Progressive Reform Movement

    Education Reformers called for curricular and administrative reform. Made schools more sanitary, open to air and sunlight, and encouraged creative activity.
  • John Dewey

    John Dewey was a leader during the progressive movement.
  • BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION!

    BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION!
    The Brown vs. Board of Education case made separate but equal school unconstitutional. This event was important for America because it started the Civil Rights Act.

    THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT & THE WAR ON POVERTY!
    This was a social moment that worked to end racial segregation and discrimination. The War on Poverty subsidized school districts that had impoverished students. When the Civil Rights Act was passed it became "one of the most significant pieces of social legislation in the United States.

    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act was the most widespread federal legislation affecting education ever passed by the Congress.

    INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES IN EDUCATION ACT!
    This act ensures that students with disability receive appropriate education that is fit to their individual needs. IDEA rules how the state and pubic services provide intervention, special education, and other services. Schools must asses students if they are suspected of having a disabilities.

    This report was put out by the Reagan administration. The report describe how America's education system was failing.
  • The Standards Movement

    This movement called for measurable standards for students.
  • NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND!

    NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND!
    This law was signed into place by President George W. Bush. The act put emphasis on annual testing, annual academic progress, report cards, and teacher qualifications. Schools were accountable for the student's outcomes.
