In 1837 Massachusetts made Horace Mann the first secretary of the State Board of Education. This is important because it has shaped the public schools for our students today. It impacts us today still because it gives our children of America a common ground to attend public schools.
  • Committee of Ten

    This is a group of educators that came up with the outline of a curriculum and standards for high schools. The committee had representatives that worked with higher education.
  • The Impact of John Dewey

    In 1894 John Dewey developed a belief for Rational Empiricism (knowledge comes from form sensory experience). Dewey was a strong advocate for democracy. He suggested that schools and the civil society need attention to bring intelligence to others.
  • Secondary School Movement

    This is a time when high schools really started to grow across the country. This is important because it brought higher education.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

This court case made it unconstitutional to separate due to race and the color of your skin. This case is so significant today because no matter what race you are, you may now attend any public school that you wish to.

African Americans were treated very unfairly and were not looked at as an equal to the White Americans. This is so important because it finally brought legal rights and equality to African Americans (this ties into the Brown vs Board of Education paragraph above).
  • National Defense Education Act

    This act provided funding to schools to help improve education. This is important because the funding that the schools now have, give so much more room for opportunities to improve your students education.

The act also provides equality to all students and provides standards for the students. This impacts us today by giving schools funding and equal rights so that the teachers can teach students and further their education.
  • Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act

    This act gives students with disabilities the right to attend an appropriate school for free that ensures all of their needs. This is important because it is giving children with disabilities an equal opportunity to learn as well.
  • A Nation at Risk Report

    America's Education was failing and at risk. The students were not getting the right education they needed. It forced schools to create a better standard and evaluate teacher preparation and teacher pay.
  • The Standards Movement

    This movement was all about encouraging student success and goals. It created correct standards to bring to the schools.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

This allows all students to get equal education, no matter the income. The funding mainly has to do with extra assistance that the student may need in order to succeed.

    This is a test given to show where each student is at and their progress that they have made. This is important because it gives teachers and assessment of how they need to teach, or what they need to teach to give all of their students the success they deserve. PRESENT

    The school choice movement is a right that all students and parents have. It says that you get to pick the school you want your child to attend at, so that they can get the best education you think is out there.
