History of Biology

  • Zacharias Janssen ( 1585- 1632 )

    Zacharias Janssen ( 1585- 1632 )
Mission 1 was about the scientist Zacharias Janssen. Janssen was credited with inventing one of the first microscopes in 1590. He invented a single-lens microscope with 9x magnification to try and help people with poor eyesight. Janssen was also tried in court for counterfitting coins in 1618 which caused him to move to Arnemuiden. After he moved he was again accused of counterfitting in 1619 which led to him to moving back to his home town Middleburg in 1621. He died between 1632-1638.
  • Robert Hooke ( 1635- 1703 )

    Robert Hooke ( 1635- 1703 )
Mission 2 was about the scientist Robert Hooke. Robert invented the balance spring in 1660, he was also the first person to come up with the word cell to describe biological organisms in 1653. Robert was born in 1635, and died in 1703
  • Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek ( 1632- 1723 )

    Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek ( 1632- 1723 )
Mission 3 was about Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek. He was born in 1632 and died in 1723, Antonie was raised in the Netherlands and as he got older he made some big contributions to science. Antonie improved the microscope in the year 1674 and built single lens microscopes that could magnify 200x. Because they didnt have good measurment systems back them, Antonie would use visible objects such as grains of sand for size reference when looking at microscopic animalcules. He died in 1723.
  • Carl Linneaus ( 1707- 1778 )

    Carl Linneaus ( 1707- 1778 )
Mission 5 was about Carl Linneaus. Linneaus was sent on several journeys throughout Sweden to classify plants and animals. When there is an L beside a classified organism it means that it was classified by Linneaus. Because of his journeys he became one of the most acclaimed scientists in Europe. He was born in 1707 and died in 1778.
  • Charles Darwin ( 1809- 1882 )

    Charles Darwin ( 1809- 1882 )
Mission 6 was about Charles Darwin. Charles went on a 5 year voyage on the HMS Beagle. While on this voyage he collected wildlife and fossils. One of his bird collections was quite important, and that is his finch collection. These birds helped Darwin with his natural selection theory. He was born in 1809 and died in 1882
  • Alfred Wallace ( 1823- 1913 )

    Alfred Wallace ( 1823- 1913 )
MIssion 7 was about Alfred Wallace. Alfred was a British Naturalist who travelled the world in search of new species. He also took part in discovering the natural selection at around 1859. Alfred was one of the first scientists to bring concerns to the impact of human activity on the envioronment. To add on, Alfred was an author that wrote both about scientific topics and social topics. Alfred died in 1913.
  • Schleiden, Schwann and Virchow

Mission 4 was about Schleiden, Schwann and Virchow. Schlieden concluded that all plants are made up of cells in 1838 and also recognized the importance of the cell nucleus. He died in 1881. Schwann concluded that all animals are made up of cells and isolated an enzyme that he named pepsin. He died in 1882. Finally, Virchow came up with the idea that cells are only formed from pre-excisting cells in 1855. He was also the first one to recognize leukemia cells. He died in 1902.
