  • Brown versus Board of Education

    The U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Brown v. Board of Education was a major event in not only the Civil Rights Movement but of American History. The Brown family called a schools Board of Education to court so his daughter could go to school.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Police forces in Montgomery, Alabama, arrested Rosa Parks when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on December 1, 1955. Because of Rosa Parks arrest, that started the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Later under the actions of Martin Luther King JR, this movement started to grow to stop segregation on bus lines.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1957

    On September 9, 1957 the president Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the law the Civil Rights Act of 1957. This acted as the first occasion since reconstruction when the Federal Government made action to support civil rights. This specific act was written by Herbert Brownell.
  • Albany Movement

    In November 1961, people in Albany started to protest every little area of segregation in their city. The movement really started to grow and get noticed when later Martin Luther King JR was invited to join them. Even though Martin Luther King JR was involved in the movement, it was still seen as a failure in many people's eyes.
  • Birmingham Campaign

    Even though many people protested and organized movements, The town of Birmingham in Alabama was still very segregated. Before long, Martin Luther King JR and a group called the (SCLC) started to launch plans and ideas to reach this city. After a while the city began to sway and protests started to break out everywhere.
  • March on Washington

    During August 23, 1963 over 250,000 people from across the nation came together and marched to the United States Capitol. This event was so big, people were planing the event for over one year straight! It was mainly an idea to draw attention to the begging of the countries African American Citizens.
  • I Have a Dream Speach

    In 1963, it was around the middle of the Civil Rights Movement, there was a march on Washington. Martin Luther King JR spoke his "I Have A Dream," which influenced many people to help support the Civil Rights Movement. This helped people out both Black and White to understand each other and start to realize that they are all the same.
  • Americus Movement

    Many organizations got together to work with black community leaders all over Americus. These protesters continued to protest even though their was tons of opposition from the cities authorities. The event to push things over the top was when the city arrested 4 civil rights activists with major charges.
  • Chicago Freedom Movement

    People in Chicago started a campaign in July 1965 when the people invited Martin Luther King JR to speak on the problems of segregation and educate people how to take a stand. After that two Organizations agreed to go into a nonviolence protest to stop all the segregation.
  • Poor People's Campaign

    After the death of Martin Luther King JR, many people stepped up into action that hadn't normally. Many people and organizations got together to morn for him and to grow even faster with the message of no segregation. The Poop People's Campaign happened in 1967 in response to many riots happening in the city.
