  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1975

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was first enacted in 1975. This made sure that students with disabilities would receive public education that was free and appropriate, just like their peers. This act helped students with disabilities because it was the the beginning of equal education that would help them be more successful and prepared for life after school (IDEA, 2017).
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 1990

    This act made it illegal to discriminate against people with disabilities in America in 1990. This met that those with disabilities could have equal opportunities in things such as transportation, public accommodations, and telecommunications. This act supported the needs of students with disabilities because it helped make there educational experience more equal to that of their peers and laid the foundation for inclusion (McLeskey,et al., 2018).
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA)

    This is the most current version of IDEA, originally enacted in 1975. It includes major updates including these six elements: Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), appropriate evaluation, Individualized Education Plan (IEP), Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), parent participation, and procedural safeguards (Saleh, n.d). This act supports students in education currently by being the most helpful in creating a truly inclusive environment for all students.
