Everyone was happy that WWI finally was over after 4 years. Everyone was celebrating that it was over.

In 1918-1919 the Spanish Flu was a deadly pandemic that killed between 20-40 million people around the world. The flu was transported to Canada and many other countries on board crowded troops ships carrying soldiers home from war. Out of 9 million Canadians, approximately 2 million contracted the disease. Eventually, 50,000 died.

On November 11, 1918 an armistice was signed that finally brought the war to an end. They also wanted to ensure that Germany could never again rise to such a powerful position in Europe: Terms of the Treaty: Territories: Germany was forced to accept the independence of Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland. Soldiers returned home expecting to have a stable job. After all, they had just fought fort heir country. However, there were few jobs as industries shifted from wartime production to peacetime production. Many immigrants had settled in Winnipeg and were unhappy with the working conditions. On May 1, 1919 the Building and Metal Trades Councils in Winnipeg voted to strike. They asked- 1) Decent wages 2) 8 hour work day 3) Right bargain for better working conditions.

On Tuesday October 29,1929, the Toronto, Montreal and New York Stock Exchanges crashed. Many companies went bankrupt and those companies who did not, had the value of their shares drop by as much as 50%. Banks closed as well. Canada exported many products to the United States. There was little demand for Canadian products and, as a result, the Canadian economy began to suffer in an indirect connection to the crash. Many of the companies who bought Canadian products were now bankrupt.

The Economy: Plenty of jobs people had money to spend
Factories, businesses, forestry, mining and hydro electric plants employed people across Canada. Prairie Farmers were prosperous because the federal government was selling wheat abroad. Society: Baby Boom; Record number of babies born in Canada after the war had ended. Couples were reunited, there were plenty of jobs, the future was optimistic. The birth rate jumped sharply in the late 1940’s and remained high for almost 20 years.
