Le 28 juin 1914, à Sarajevo en Bosnie-Herzégovine (pays annexé par l’Autriche-Hongrie), l’Archiduc-héritier François Ferdinand et sa femme, Sophie Chotek, sont assassinés par un militant serbe du nom de Gavrilo Princip. Ce dernier faisait partie d’un complot regroupant 7 personnes serbes. On associe cet événement comme étant l’élément déclencheur de la Première Guerre mondiale.
