    Birth

    Hildegard was born in Bermershein (now Germany). She was the tenth and last child born to her parents Hildebert and Mechthild Burggrf von Bingen. She was sickly from the time of her birth and was given to the church as a 'tithe'.

    Lived with Sister Jutta

    At 8 years old she was sent to live in a retreat where Sister Jutta von Sponheim prepares her for convent life.

    Takes Monastic Vows

    Hildegard takes monastic vows and becomes a Benedictine nun at 15
  • Mar 18, 1136

    Becomes head of her sister commuinity

    Hildgard is elected head of her sister commuinity after the death of of Sister Jutta von Sponheim.

    Recieves call from God

    Hildegard , who claimed to have visions from a young age , reciees a prophetic call from God asking her to record her visions. She begins writing them down.
  • Mar 18, 1148

    Hildegard recognised as a seer and visionary

    Pope Eugene III creates a commision to determine whether her visions were divinely inspired after hearing of Hildegard. The commision visits her and reports the visions to be true.

    Finishes volume

    Hildegard finishes her volume “Liber scivias domini” ("Know the Paths of the Lord").

    Teacching and missionary tours

    Hildegarrd makes several teaching and missionary tours through the Rhineland and France.

    Founds Convent Elbingen

    Hildegard founds the all-female Convent Elbingen, near Rudeshiem, and embarks on additional teaching and missionary tours troughout Europe.

    Church Conflicts

    Hildegard runs into conflicts with the Church for refusing to have the body of an excommunicated man who had been buried in consecrated ground dug up. The Church rules that she is not allowed to take the Eucharist.
