  • Race Riots/Blacks move North

    Race Riots/Blacks move North
    Between 1914 and 1918 blacks moved north from the south. They did not like the way they were being treated and they wanted better jobs. In a race riot it was the whites who started rioting in response to perceived threats from blacks. Blacks rioted because they wanted equality. They were tired of being treated like second-class citizens.

    Between 1939 and 1945 African Americans served in the US armed services, mostly in segregated units. In 1940, Benjamin Davis became the first black Brigadier General in the US Army. Desegregation of the Armed Forces began on a trial basis during the war. It became a permanent policy in 1948.

    Brown VS BOE
    The Brown family sued the local BOE to end segregation everywhere. Their daughter, Linda, had to travel by bus in order to attend a blacks only school;. On her way, she passed a school for whites only. Her parents wanted her to attend the closer school, and had to fight the BOE to allow her to attend.

    Rosa Parks
    Rosa Parks was arrested on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She would not give up her seat for a white person because she thought it was unfair.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    More than 250,000 people who were white and black came to the nation's capital.The crowd listened to Martin Luther King Jr. talk about equal rights.
