    Benjamin Mays becomes president of Morehouse Colledge
    Benjamin Mays became president of morehouse colledge in 1940 and his most famous student there was Martin Luther King jr.
  • Ellis Arnall

    Ellis Arnall
    Ellis Arnall ran for governor againsst Eugene Talmadge in 1942. He won the election and became Georgia's youngest governor and the first to serve a four year term. Arnall restored accredidation back to Georgia's schools, repealed the poll tax, and lowered suffrage. He also let blacks vote in the white primary which started his decline. He lost his popularity b/c of the white primaries.
  • Three Governors Controversy

    Three governor Controversy was between 3 governors claiming they had the right to be governor. It all began with Eugene Talmadge, who ran for office in 1946. His health was in really bad shape. His people knew this, so they started a write in campaign for his son, Herman. Eugene won the election then died. Click the link above to read more.

    Video of Herman Talmadges interviewHerman Talmadge was the governor from 1947-1955. He improved the Georgia educational system greatly. When the schools integrated in 1954 due to the federal government, he was one of the biggest critics.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    the official record of Brown vs Board of Education. Brown wanted his little girl to go to school with the whites because they had better facilities. The supreme court ruled school segragation illegal and the schools nation-wide became integrated. They idn't all join immediately, but it eventually happened.

    I have a dream speech videoIn 1955, Martin Luther King jr. became a leader of the "first great Negro nonviolent demonstration of contemporary times in the United States"- the bus boycott, which lasted 382 days. It ended when the supreme court said segragation on buses was illegal. His most famous speech was the "I have a Dream" speech which can found in the link above. He was assanated on april 4, 1968.

  • SNCC

    The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee first started in Feburary 1st,1960, when a group of black colledge students from North Carolina were denied service and refused to leave. From there they did nonviolent protests to get there point across by coordinating sit-ins and other protests.

    These 2 students became the first african-american students ever to attend UGA (Names in title). Students at UGA were upset at this and started chanting "2, 4, 6, 8, we don't want to integrate!" They also threw rocks and broken bottles. The very same night they Holmes and Hunter were suspended for safety reasons. After these 2 brave students, UGA would become a safe haven for all students.
  • Albany Movement

    It was the first mass civil rights movement of that era. The goal was to completely desegragate the community. Martin Luther King jr. was also drawn into this movement in december, 1961, where he and 1,000 other african americans were jailed. Out of Albany's failure would come Birmingham's success as Martin learned a very important lesson in Albany.
  • March on Washington

    On August 28, 1963 , 200,000 african americans marched on washington for jobs and freedom. One of the most important things to happen on the march was Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech (which can be found on a previous event) which called for racial justice.
  • Civil Rights Act

    In 1964, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act. The Act stated that you can't discriminate against one's gender or race when hiring, promoting, and firing.

  • Maynard Jackson as Mayor of Atlanta

    Maynard Jackson as Mayor of Atlanta
    Maynard Jackson became Mayor of Atlanta in 1973. He was the first african american to become the mayor of a major southern city. As mayor, he made sure that small businesses recieved more municipal contracts. He also transformed the local police department to not discriminate against blacks, and created a huge terminal at the Hartsfield airport (later to be named Hartsfield-Jackson due to him). As his term limit came to an end, he helped Andrew Young to become the next mayor.
