Helen Longino received her PhD in Sociology from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Her dissertation dealt with Inference and Scientific Discovery. She is a Feminist, Longino emphasizes the idea of "doing epistemology as a feminist", an approach bringing with it an awareness of the many ways in which a question may be characterized.

Longino has over the years contributed to feminist epistemology and feminist studies. She explores the subjectivity of science and philosophy to the structures of the society around it. She champion on the debate about the role of feminism and patriarchy on the social level and how tsocail structures influences academia.
