Harry S. Truman was the first of three children born to John Anderson Truman, a farmer and mule trader, and his wife, Martha Ellen Truman. Harry was named in honor of his maternal uncle, Harrison Young, but his parents couldn't decide on a middle name.

In 1905, Truman was drafted into the Missouri National Guard and served there until 1911.

After the war, relations between the USSR and the USA began to deteriorate. March 5, 1946 was then in the United States Winston Churchill was invited to Westminster College in Fulton to lecture on "world Affairs".

Churchill made a condition that Truman should accompany him to Fulton and attend the speech he would give. On March 12, 1947, Truman proclaimed his doctrine, which involved helping Turkey and Greece to save them from "international communism." This was one of the key events of the beginning of the cold war.

Truman was a supporter of the creation of a NATO military bloc. He offered to do this in order to stop the expansion of the Soviet Union in Europe. On April 4, 1949, the USA, Canada, a number of European countries and Turkey signed an agreement on the creation of a new military Alliance.

On 1 November 1950, two Puerto Ricans, Griselio Torresola and Oscar Colazzo, tried to kill Truman in his own home. However, they were unable to break into his house — Torresola was killed and Colazzo wounded and arrested. The latter was sentenced to death by electric chair, but at the last moment Truman commuted him to life imprisonment.

Truman died of pneumonia in Kansas city at 7.50 am on 26 December 1972. Buried in the courtyard of the Truman Library. After 34 years on the same day died another us President — Gerald Ford.
