Tough Being the Only Girl
As a young child, Greer was encouraged by her parents to play musical instruments and create art However, Greer's three older brothers teased her for these activities, or even destroyed her art work. When her brothers drew on the artwork her parents had just praised, Greer began only playing with these mediums in her room and not sharing them with her family out of shame. In Erikson's third stage of Initiation vs. guilt, Greer was discouraged from this activity by the guilt she experienced. -
Transitioning to a New School
After growing up in Anchorage, Greer decided to move to New England and attend a private boarding school for her final two years of high school. Greer, at first, struggled with going from being a top student and athlete to being an average one, and with fitting into a community that valued wealthy and status. In Erikson's fifth stage of Identity vs. Identity confusion, Greer was very aware of how she was different than her new peers, but eventually adapted and found her place. -
Moving in with the First Boyfriend
Right after graduating from college, Greer moved back to Anchorage and moved into an apartment with her first boyfriend. This was the first time she had lived with a romantic partner. She put this step as being more important than saving money by living at home with her parents, and more important than continuing to travel to other places. In Erikson's 6th stage of Intimacy vs. isolation, Greer worked hardest at valuing her committed, long-term love relationship. -
Career Change
After working for 10 years in politics, Greer became frustrated with red tape and the inability to directly help others. She decided to change careers by returning to school for a nursing degree so she could more directly help those in the most need. In Erikson's 7th stage of Generativity vs. stagnation, Greer is putting her efforts towards helping others.
