  • Il Duce is crowned; Political

    Benito Mussolini was legally named ruler of Italy after 30,000 Fascists marched to the capital. The Fascists prompted the king to give Mussolini power.
  • The Dawes Plan; Economical

    The Dawes plan, created by Charles Dawes, aimed to improve the economic state of Germany. The plan included a 200 million dollar loan from the US to Germany in addition to a more practical schedule for paying off their WWI debts.
  • Stalin's Collective Farms; Economic

    The Soviet government took control of 25 million Russin farms and joined them into large collective farms. These farms were created in an effort to boost the argricultural output of farms in the USSR.
  • Kellogg-Braid Pact; social

    The Kellog Braid Pact aimed at making peace amoung almost all of the nations of the world. Unfortuatly, the pact had no method of enforcing the peace regardless of the numerous nations who sighned the pact.
  • Black Tuesday; Economical

    The US stock market crashed on this day. This marked the beginning of the economic recession known as the Great Depression.
  • The Great Purge; Political

    Joseph Stalin initiated the Great Purge, or the disposal of individuals who threatened his power. In the Great Purge, Stalin killed about 8-13 million people.
  • Invasion of Shanghai; Military

    The Japanese army invaded Shanghai, China. Shanghai was under total Japanese control by November.
  • Rape of Nanjing; Military

    The Japanese army invaded Nanjing, China. In the process they killed and raped citizens of the city including children and women.
  • End and aftermath of Nanjing Rape; Cultural

    The Rape of Nanjing ended. Around 200,000-300,000 people were killed in the process. About 20,000-80,000 women were sexually assulted. Seno-Japanese tensions still exsist to date.
  • Munich Conference; Political

    This meeting was proposed by Mussolini involoving the countries of Great Britain, Germany, France, and Italy in Munich. The goal of this meeting was appeasement, or giving into another country's demands to avoid war.
  • Kristallnacht; Social

    Nazi troopers vandalized Jewish businesses, homes, and synagogues throughout Germany. The word Kristallnacht means the night of the broken glass which refers to all the glass in the streets from shop windows.
  • Battle of Midway; Military

    The Japanese planned to attack the US airstrip on Midway Isalnd. Their plan to attack was decoded by the Allies who caught the Japanese off guard and won the battle.
  • Battle of Guadalcanal; Military

    Theallies battled the Japanese on Guadal Island in an effort to halt their completion of an air base. After six months, the Allies won.
  • Battle of Stalingrad; Military

    Germans attacked and later controlled 90 percent of the city of Stalingrad. Then, winter set in in Russia, weakening the Germans. This allowed the Russians to surround them and later push themout of their country.
  • D-Day invasion; Military

    The Allied forces storm the beaches of Normandy in the largest land, air, and sea attack in histroy. The Allies were led by Dwight D. Eisenhower.
  • The Battle of the Buldge; Military

    The Germans broke through allied defenses creating a bulge shape in their lines. the allies eventually pushed the Germans back and forced them to fight a war on two fronts of their country.
  • Execution of Gartner and Robota; social

    Ella Gartner and and Roza Robota were executed on this day. They were Jewish prisoners who aided in uprisings in Auschwitz.
  • Germany's Unconditional Surrender; Military

    The Thrid Reich, the German Empire, unconditionally surrendered to Dwight D. Eisenhower on this day. Two days later, the surrender was sighned in Berlin.
  • Bombing of Hiroshima; social

    The United States determined that in order to defeat Japan, they would need to invade or drop an atom bomb on them. They ruled that the invasion would be costly on American lives and decided to nuke Japan which killed 70,000-80,000 people.
  • Japanese Surrender; Military

    On this day, the Japanese surrendered to the General Macarther of the US. The official surrender took place in Tokyo Bay on the battleship Missouri.
