Great Depression and World War II (1920-1945)

  • Black Tuesday

    Economical Event:
    The stock market crashed. It was the most catastrophic stock market crash in the history of the United State. The price of stocks completely collapsed and lead to the Great Depression.
  • Rome Berlin Axis

    Political Event:
    Hitler and Mussolini reached an agreement to join forces. Germany and Fascist Italy sign a treaty of cooperation called Rome Berllin Axis. The axis powers were now Germany, Italy, and Japan.
  • Munich Conference

    Social Event:
    It was a meeting between Germany, France, Britain, and Italy. The Czechs were not invited to the meeting even though it was about them. Hitler was trying to take over Czechoslovakia. France and Britain gave into Germany's demands but only if they respected the Czech’s borders.
  • Kristallnacht

    Social Event:
    The Night of broken Glass. It was a persecution against Jewish people. The German people wanted revenge for the murder of a German diplomat at the hands of a young Jew. It was a memorable night were Nazis destroyed jewish synagogues, homes, and Jewish-owned businesses.
  • Invasion of Poland

    Military Event:
    Germany invades the Polish capital, Warsaw. It was the first act of starting WWII. This was the first time Hitler used Blitzkrieg. They attacked using fast moving airplanes and tanks, followed by massive infantry force.
  • World War II begins

    Political Event:
    This act starts the beginning of war when France and Britain declare war on Germany. Germany invaded Poland, which France and Britain had an agreement with. Other nations declared war on September 10.
  • Italy Declares War.

    Political Event:
    Fascist Italy declares war on Great Britain and France. Mussolini Italy’s dictator had wanted to expand his empire and now saw the opportunity to take British dominions in Africa.
  • Gas Chambers

    Technological event:
    Gas chambers were created by Major Delos A. Turner and were first used in Auschwitz at Stammlager. They Gas chambers were a quick way to kill people. They could hold up to 700-800 people.
  • Attack on Pearl Harbor

    Military Event:
    America knew there was going to be an attack but not were. Japan took them by surprise when they attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Japan used suicide planes that crashed into the island.
  • America Declares War.

    Political Event:
    After the attack on Pearl Harbor America couldn’t remain neutral. They declared war on Japan that would last many years.
  • Relocation Camps

    Economical Event:
    In response to the attack at Pearl Harbor japanesee-Americans were being rounded up and placed in relocation camps. The camps were military areas far from the coast of Hawaii.
  • Internment of Japanese-Americans

    Political Event:
    After the attack at Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the internment. He said Japanese-Americans were a threat to the country. Even the children native to America were place in camps.
  • Mussolini arrested

    Political Event:
    After the Allies captured Italy, Mussolini toppled from power. King Victor Emmanuel III then had Mussolini arrested.
  • D-Day

    Military Event:
    The Allies invaded Normandy. It was the largest sea and land attack in history. Britain, France, America and Canada marched 60 miles against Germany. Thousands died on the first day.
  • The Death of the President

    Social Event:
    Franklin D. Roosevelt died after 12 years of serving. His successor was Truman. He died a few weeks before seeing the end of the war.
  • Hitler's Death

    Social Event:
    With the capital surrounded Hitler married his long time friend Eva Braun and the next day they both committed suicide. After their death the bodies were burned. Soon after came a surrender from Germany.
  • Soviets Surround the Capital

    Military Event:
    Six million Soviet troop from the east and three million Allied forces from the southwest surrounded Berlin. Hitler was in Berlin at the time of the attack and ended his life becuase he was trapped.
  • Mussolini Dies

    Social Event:
    Italian resistance fighters found Mussolini disguised as a German Soldier and shot him. They dragged him out and hung him in the city for everyone to see.
  • The Nazi Surrender

    Military Event:
    Eisenhower accepted the unconditional surrender of the Third Reich from Germany. The Nazi had finally Surrender.Hitler was dead and the war would soon be over.
  • The End of the War

    Political Event:
    The German's surrender was officially signed in Berlin. It is know as V-E Day. (Victory in Europe) After six years of fighting the war was over.
  • Manhattan Project

    Technological Event:
    The Atomic bomb was created by Robert Oppenheimer. It took six years and millions of dollars. It was first tested in New Mexico and later used at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
  • Atomic Bomb

    Economical Event:
    The Atomic bomb was the first nuclear bomb dropped. It was dropped on the island of Honshu at the city of Hiroshima. It killed 210,00 people total. The dropping of the atomic bomb was the reason Japan surrendered
  • Second Atomic Bomb

    Economical Event:
    The second bomb dropped in the city of Nagasaki. The radiation of the two bombs killed may after the bomb was dropped.
  • Japan surrenders

    Military Event:
    Japan surrenders to General Douglas MacArthur. The war between Japan and America had ended. MacArthur stayed in Japan to make sure they would not revolt and to rebuild their government the right way.
  • New Constitution

    Political Event:
    February 1946 MacArthur and his American advisers drew up a new constitution for Japan. They were making Japan a government ran by the people. Japan accepted the constitution and it went into effect.
