Black Thursday prompts the start of the stock market crash. With this crash the world plunged into depression and the price of stock immediately dropped by 11%. With Wall Street bankers buying the stocks only 2% was lost.

The Dust Bowls which became characteristic of the 1930s farmers' struggle. Not only did we have a struggling economy but the land was unable to be used to grow crops which in turn pushed many farmers out of their land. The Dust Bowl was soon the worst drought in over 300 years. Congress provided $65 million for food boxes, seed and feed for farmers. Click Here

Food riots erupt as people struggle for food. Over 100 people smashed through windows stealing food from markets. 100 policemen managed to bring the riots under control and over 7 people were arrested. A store owner pulled out a gun to try and protect himself but in turn got his arm broken as he tried to defend his store.

Democratic candidate Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President of the United States. Roosevelt got 22,800,000 votes in the election.

Only five days after Roosevelts inauguration the launching of the New Deal was put in place. This aims to prevent more terrible failures and the act closed all banks in the United States. Roosevelts main purpose was to recovery for the US from the depression. Click Here

The Works Progress Administration was created by the Emergency Relief Appropriation. They hired over 8.5 million people to help with the unemployment crisis.

President Roosevelt was elected for a second term.

Roosevelt had some very trying times while in office, one being trying to manage debt but also trying to keep the economy out of the depression. In attempt to help cut back he stopped spending so much on New Deal Programs, which eventually pushed the economy back into the depression.

Hitler began to invade Poland and President Roosevelt persuaded Congress to remove military arms embargo to France and Britain to support them during the war.

Japanese attacked pearl harbor, which led the United States to join the war. This meant that the country was finally able to get out of the depression by mobilizing for war. After the war was over the United States emerged as the only economic superpower in the world.
