She designed Flow-Matic to help people who aren't scientist or mathematicians, trying to do typical business task . Flow-Matic later became the basis for COBOL which was a universal language that she did not create.

Only 7 months after her retirement she was called back to active duty as leader of Naval Data Automation Command.

She became the first person from the US and first woman of any nationality to become a Distinguished Fellow of the British Computer Society.

At the age of 79 she finally retired for the last time with the rank of Rear Admiral. Immediately after retiring she became senior consultant to Digital Equipment Corporations.
