    Benjamin Mays was an African American minister, educator and social activist. Before the civil rights movement, he was one of the most outspoken critics of segregation.
    Maynard Jackson was the first African American mayor of Atlanta. He served 3 terms.
    Lester Maddox was a big believer in segregation, but ended up appointing many African Americans to gov't postions and supported many African American causes.

    When Eugene Talmadge died in 1947, he had already been elected governor, but died before his inauguration. Eugene's followers secretly wrote in his son's name, Herman Talmadge, as a candidate, so that he could be chosen to be governor. Melvin Thompson believed that he should become governor, as he was elected Lieutenant Governor. Eventually Talmadge became the governor in 1948.

    The Sibley Comission helped to desegregate schools. It was decided that every public school would desegregate or shut down. This began the end of a massive resistance towards desegregation.

    These two African Americans helped to desegregate schools. They were the first two African Americans to go to UGA in 1961.

    March on Washington Video Thousands of Americans gathered in Washingto DC for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It called for civil and economic rights for African Americans. Here, Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream", which talked about his dream to end racism.

    This outlawed discrimination based on color, race, sex, religion, or national origin. It ended racial segregation in schools, at workplaces and by facilities that served the public.

    Andrew Young
    Andrew Young was an activist for the civil rights movement. He became mayor of Atlanta. He worked with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference which was an Atlanta based civil rights organization. He was the first African American since Reconstruction to be elected to Congress.
