Twenty months after Genie is born, her father decided to keep her as socially isolated as possible, because he thought that she was severely mentally retarded, a view which intensified as she got older, causing him to dislike her and withhold care and attention. -
Genie's isolation
Until the age of 13 years and 7 months Genie was kept locked alone in a room. During this time she was almost always kept, strapped to a child's toilet or bound to her crib with her arms and legs completely immobilized, Nobody interacted with her, and was left severely malnourished.The extent of her isolation prevented her from being exposed to any significant amount of speech, and as a result she did not acquire language during childhood. -
Genie is noticed.
Los Angeles child welfare authorities finally take notice of Genie, after her mother accidentally entered the general social services office. -
Media finds Genie.
News of Genie reached major media outlets, receiving a great deal of local and national attention. -

Genie's father commits suicide before court hearing of child abuse. -
Hospital life for Genie.
In late June 1971 Genie left the hospital to live with her teacher at the hospital, but a month and a half later authorities removed her from this location and placed her with the family of the scientist heading the research team. -
Genie and her mother.
Soon after turning 18, in mid-1975, Genie returned to live with her mother, who after a few months decided she could not adequately care for her. Authorities then moved her in the first of what would become a series of institutions for disabled adults, and the people running it cut her off from almost everyone she knew and subjected her to extreme physical and emotional abuse. -

Genie's mother suddenly stopped the research team from seeing Genie again, immediately ending all testing and observations. -

Genie is a ward of the state of California, and is living in an undisclosed location in Los Angeles. She is living a simple lifestyle in a small private facility for mentally underdeveloped adults and appears to be happy. She speaks only a few words and she still communicates fairly well in sign language.
