The English Language developed from a West Germanic language, which originated from the Anglo-Frisian dialects. This was concidered Old English.

In the 11th century William the Conqueror, conquered England. He brought with him the French language. The upper class started using French and the lower classes spoke English. In the 14th century English became the primary language, with some French words mixed in. This became known as Middle English.

The English language changed and people started shortening vowels. England was influenced by many other countries and new words and phrases started to be used. Printing was invented and books became available to more people. The dialect of London became the common form of English. The first English dictionary was printed in 1604.
