Frida becomes afflicted with Polio. She has damage to her leg, resulting in one leg being larger than the other.

Frida is involved in a horrible train accident. Frida remained bed ridden for months as a result of her injuries, which also barred her from having any children due to a perforated abdomen and uterus.

Bed ridden for months, Frida turns to making art and takes up painting. Most of her early work is self portraiture, often to display her anguish and sadness regarding the accident. "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best."
