  • MEXICAN REVOLUTION - 1910-1920

  • FRIDA - POLIO at age 6 - required 9 months therapy and recuperation, resulted in withered right leg.

  • MEXICAN RENAISSANCE - 1920-1950

    Mexican Renaissance occurred following the Mexican Revolution. It resulted in many murals in public buildings and it honored the dignity of the working masses.   • FRIDA - EDUCATION Escuela Nacional Preparatoria. She was 1 of the 35 girls chosen out of 2000 applicants. Her goal was to study medicine.

    Many of her close friends at the school supported socialist ideas. Their early discussions formed foundation for her lifelong interest in communism. It was at this school where she first saw Diego Rivera working on the mural, "Creation" in the school's lecture hall.

    Frida was 22 years old, Diego was 42 years old. It was a civil ceremony. Frida's mother is unhappy with the union, her father is less resistant.

    They left Mexico for a trip to US, first stop being San Francisco. Diego had several commissions in the states. Frida created this painting in 1931. The ribbon above their heads says, "Here you see us, Frieda Kahlo, with my beloved husband, Diego Rivera. I painted these portraits in the beautiful city of San Francisco for our friend Albert Bender".
