    Succersors of the previous Vietnamese leader Gia Long did not like the European's company. Early in the 19th century Seven Missionaries and an unkown amount of Vietnamese Christians were excecuted. France's warnings prior to these events lead the French to invade Vietnam twice before colonizing it. In 1858-63 and 1873-74. (Picture shown is of Emperor Gia Long)

    Due to many delays the French forces reached Vietnam in August of 1858. Frances small army could not get deep into Vietnam because they lacked shallow-draft boats to go up the Perfume River to reach Hue.     Vietnamese were treated terribly during the the time of french colonization. To scare the civilians from questioning authority, there would be decapitated heads in the centers of towns. Also it was almost impossible to earn a good living without knowing the French culture and language.

    France struggles/ gains control of Vietnam
    France had recently had been defeated in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71). They did not have enough money or troops to continue conquering new lands. There was also a faction that was anticolonial and they believed Frances recovery was more important than anything else. After ten years of France's quick economic growth they were ready go after Fort Hanoi. This took place in April of 1882. 250 french soldiers were sent to extinguish the Black Flags ( a gang of Vietnamese and Chinese pirates)...

    France forces reached Hue where emperor Tu Duc had died weeks before their arrival. The Country of Vietnam was surrendered to the French by the court mandarins (Picture shown is a scene of the Franco-Prussian War)

    Vietnam Uprises
    Members of VNQDD (Viet Nam Quoc Dan Dang) turned against their french commanders. The war/uprising is called "Yem Bai Uprising". The French were warned of the resistance movements and the mutinies were avoided. The man that started the VNQDD was arrested his name was Nguyen Thai Hoc.

    Vietnam Declaration of Independence
    This declaration was affirmed by Ho Chi Minh. The document was formed at Hanoi in Tonkin. The basis of the Vietnamese declaration was formed off of the "Americas Declaration of Independence" and France's "Declaration of the rights of man and of the Citizen". To give examples, some statements were "all men are created equal" and " must always remain free and have equal rights."

    The war that took place in Vienam was very similar to the conflict that still exists between North and South Korea today. One coutnry was split in two. The North being communist in both cases. North Korea is one of the few communist countries that still exists today. United States was heavily involved in the Vietnam war.     People are still being affected by this war today. A newly developed weopon was used in the Vietnam war it was called napalm and it set everything it hit on fire. United Nations banned the use of this weopon on innocent civilians. Although it was banned accidents did occur in particular a 9 year old girl was practiclly burned to death. She required 17 surgeries to fully recover from the burns.
