Vietnam was succesfully governed for 1,100 years by foriegn rule. The chinese dynasties such as the Han, Eastern Han, Eastern Wu, and the Jin dynasties. Vietnam was also governed independently but their leadership didn't last to long. Nearly all of the people lived in villages and growing wet rice basically ran the Vietnamese economy. The poor people mostly survived on rice, but if you were wealthy, you would buy meat and fish. Vietnam was divided into two classes, the poor and the wealthy.

France imperializes Vietnam in 1867. The French wanted to gain Vietnam because other countries were also claiming land. France was competing to be one of the top countries in Europe to imperialize land.

The French came to Veitnam to find a new place to sell their goods. Church interests, merchants, and producers pushed the French to go to Vietnam for economical purposes. Getting Veitnam was a good thing for the French because they were competing with other European countries to be powerful and to see who the strongest country was, and can imperialize the most land.

The Vietnamese people resisted French rule. The Vietnamese killed people that tried to convert people to Christianity and French missionarries. They tried to rebel, but the French were harsh and fought down every rebellion that the Vietnamese threw at them. Since there were many rebellions, many Veitnamese people were killed and executed by the French.

The French used the Direct Control method. Using this method means that foriegn officals were brought into the country to rule. In this method of rule, no self-rule was allowed and the goal was to lead to an "assimilation" policy. Assimilation is the thought that in time, the local populations of the country being imperialized will adopt the cultures of the the imperializing country. The French ended up killing a lot of Vietnamize people because they were trying to rebel.

In 1945, Vietnam claimed their independence. The leader of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh declares independence.

In 1946, Vietnam declares war with the French because of a deteriorating relationship between them.

In 1965, there were 200,000 U.S. troops in Vietnam because of the Vietnam War.

Finally, in 1982, there was a Veitnam Memorial unveiled in Washington D.C. for all the U.S. Soliders killed in the Veitnam war.
