The French and Indian War ended with an important document, the Treaty of Paris. Signed in Paris, France, it granted the British all land in French Canada and east of the Mississippi River, and the Spanish land west of the Mississippi River, leaving the French with no land in North America.

A proclamation was passed by King George III stating that all land west of the Appalachian Mountains was off-limits to the British. This made the colonists very angry because they thought they would have more land.
