It increased support in Tokyo for extending Japan's defensive perimeter and for Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's plan to lure the U.S. fleet out and destroy it. 4.) Japan's decision to agree lead them to the decisive Japanese defeat in the Battle of Midway.

    • Key Facts: 1.) The object of these coordinated movements was an assault on Australia preparatory to an invasion of the country. 2.) The Japanese carrier Shoho was sunk, forcing the troop transports under escort to turn back. 3.) The battle costed both sides tremendously. U.S. aircraft damaged the Shokaku but at the cost of 33 out of 82 of the attacking craft.

    • Key Facts: 1.) ensured that Australia was safe from a Japanese invasion while the sea route from Australia to America was also protected. 2.) December of 1942, the emperor ordered a withdrawal from Guadalcanal 3.) Japanese Navy controlled the sea around Guadalcanal and frequently fired on the Marines.

  • Battle of Saipan

    • Key Facts: 1.) Once the island was secure SEEBEE’s started to construct runways that could be used by the B-29’s. 2.) The Japanese population on the mainland now faced an aerial bombardment that brought the war home to them almost on a daily basis. 3.) Saipan was declared secure on July 9th. Nearly 30,000 Japanese soldiers had died trying to defend the island.

    • Key Facts: 1.) The Americans also lost 36 ships. 368 ships were also damaged. 763 aircraft were destroyed. 2.) America major problem was not know much information about Okinawa 3.) The Japanese lost 16 ships sunk and over 4,000 aircraft were lost.
