British amd French Rivalry
The French and British were two of the strongest powers so they competed for wealth and empire in different parts of the world. Their feelings for eachother caused bitter feelings between the British and Frence colonists in North America. Later on their bitterness increased when the British was interested in the Ohio River Valley. The French called this their own land and did not want the British sharing their profitable fur trade. -
The Iroquois Confederacy
The iroquois came under greater pressure as the British moved to the Ohio Valley. Eventually the the leaders of confederacy gave trading rights to the british which made the Frence mad. Becasue of this the relationship between the Frence and British are difficult to establish. -
Iroquois Confederacy
The most powerful gruop of Native Americans in the East was the Iroquois Confederacy, based on the Ney York area. This Confederacy included 5 nations. Other groups joined later on and were conqured by the Iroquois. Then the English referred to the confederacy as the six nations. -

American Colonists Take Action
Governor Roebrt Dinwiddle of Virginia sent a survery named George Washington into the country to tell teh French that they were trespassing on land that Great Britian claimed. -
Washingtons First Command
Dinwiddle made Washington a lieutenant. He then sent Washinton back to the Ohio country with a group of ,civilians trained to fight in emergencies , 150 men, to build a fort where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form teh Ohio River. They showed up to see the French already build their fort and attcked them even though they were greatly out numbered. Washinton's soilders surrendered and were released back to Virginia. Everyone considered Washinton a hero for striking the French. -
Albany Plan of the Union
Representatives from severeal different colonies met in Albany to discuss the threat of the war. They wanted a plan to defend themsleves against the French and had the Iroquois join the British. Ben Franklin came up with a plan, but no colony accepted because they didn't want to join together and give up their power. Soon later a full on French and Indian war happened.
