    Magna Carta

    Magna Carta
    King John was treated the people harshly which caused them to rebel against him. The purpose of the Magna Carta was to limit the power of the monarch and protect the rights of the English people. This effected monarchs to come; it guarenteed that no one could be above the law.

    The English Parliament

    The cause of Parliament was to create a sort of government for the people. The purpose was to make laws and make sure that monarchs didn't have too much power. This effected the way the government is formed.
  • Virginia House of Burgesses

    Virginia House of Burgesses
    The people of Jamestown decided that they needed to be governed. The purpose of the House of Burgesses was to provide a type of government that represented the people. The House of Burgesses marked the beginning of elf government in America which has effected today's government.
  • Mayflower Compact

    Mayflower Compact
    Once settled in Plymouth, the Pilgrims realized they needed rule to live by in order to survive. The purpose of the Mayflower Compact was to provide a plan of government to the people. The effect the Mayflower Compact had was that is established direct democracy.
  • Fundamental Order of Conneticut

    Fundamental Order of Conneticut
    Pilgrims were being persecuted for their religious beliefs in Mass. so they founded the colony of Conneticut. They wrote the Fundamental Orders of Conneticut to call for an assembly of representatives from each town to make laws. It was America's first constitution and helped establish a democracy.

    Enlightenment

    It was the ideas of a cultural movement. John Locke argued that people were born free, equal and independent and that possessed natural rights to life, liberty and property. Jean-Jacques Rousseau argued that people had the right to determine how they should be governed. Baron de Montesquieu developed the idea about dividing the branches in governement to balance each others power. This created separation of powers. These Enlightenment thinkers along with their ideas affected America's laws.

    Glorious Revolution
    Parliament didn't agree wtih certain things King James II did, so they overthrew him. They invited his daughter Mary and her husband William to rule which demonstrated that Parliament is sronger than the monarch. This effected England's government in the future because no ruler had more power than Parliament.
  • English Bill of Rights

    The Parliament wanted to make sure the people had power and protection. The purpose of the English Bill of Rights was to further limit the monarch's power. The effect was that it help contribute to the Bill of Rights that are in our Constitutioin.

    England's Common Law

    England had no wriiten law and the people developed laws to live by. The Common Law's purpose was to rest on the court's decision rather than regulations written by those who made the laws. The laws about property, contracts, and personal injury today are all based on England's Common Law.
