    The name of the Magna Carta means "The Great Charter". Written by King John of England, this was to insure that all people, even the king, was subject to follow the law and to be punished by it. This is stil in effect by insuring that the president, or any person on popularity, is still punished equally if they commit a crime.

    The House of Burgesses was the first elected legislative body in the American Colonies by a democrative system. The meeting was held in a church that still stands today. The burgesses included George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. These people were to make laws for the colonies. This helped to prove that the colonies could make laws on their own successfully without the harsh laws that Britian put on them.

    After the Mayflower ship landed, the Mayflower Compact was written. The purpose of the Compact was to get self-government until the settlers could get permission from New England. This was to settle some of the talk of the passengers.

    The Fundamental Orders of Conneticut was the first consitution of the American Colonies. In speccific, it was that of Conneticut, as the name suggests. It was meant to ensure order and law in Conneticut. It was written by the Purists. This document ensured the that the river rowns were in charge.
