A critical island for the U.S. The base located on that island had bombers that could reach Japan. The Battle of Iwo Jima had the highest death toll of any other battle on the Pacific at that point.

More kamikaze attacks were launched. 110,000 Japanese soldiers were killed in this battle. 7,600 Americans were killed.

America dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima making the city cease to exist. The Japanese still refused to surrender.
