    The American Revolutionary War was between Britain and the 13 colonies, it was from 1775-1783. Led to the creation of the Declaration of Independance.

    This document was George Washington's speech urging the people and their future government to avoid political parties. In this speech George Washington also warned about the involvement in foreighn affairs.
  • Isolationism

    Isolationism
    The idea that the United States should not become involved in the problems of other countries. It started with Washington's Farewell Address and lasted for about 150 years.
  • First Barbary War

    First Barbary War
    This was the first war fought between the United States and the North West African Berber Muslim (Barbary states). It started because Barbary pirates attacked American merchant ships, which were held for ransom. This war lasted from 1801-1805.
  • Embargo Act

    President Thomas Jefforson's request that all U.S. ports are closeed to export shipping and restrictions on imports on Great Britain were placed.The embargo was revoked on March 1, 1809.

    This was a 32 month event conflict between the U.S,, the U.K. and Ireland. Historians are not sure as the why the U.S. decided to declare war but many argue it started over the violation of American rights.

    Manifest Destiny was the idea of expansion westward. This led to future conflicts because the pioneers kicked out all other residents of the area.

    Helped to end the paying of Barbary pirates from the United States. It also helped to end piracy and it started free trade because of Britain and Netherland's involvement.

    A United States policy warning European powers to stop trying to colonize in North or South America. Any acts on the part of Britain would be seen as acts of aggression and would require the intervention of the United States.

    A war caused by the annexation of Texas. This war lasted 1 year and a half. Mexico lost half of its territory.

    The annexation of Hawaii resulted from the fear of Hawaii being taken by European powers. Many U.S. citizens petitioned that Hawaii be annexed, and it was but not before the over throw of Lydia Kamakaeha Liliuokalani"s kingdom.

    The first world was centered around Europe. It started with the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. The whole affair happened because all countries had formed alliances and when one country got involved another did and then another.

    Mostly between the United States and the Soviet Union. This was started for a few reasons. Those reasons being the fear of a communist attack, and attacks using nuclear weapons.

    This doctrine was based on the beleif that the United States should intervine (throughout the world)) to prevent the spread of communism.
    A containment policy (for communism).

    A plan that allowed the United States to provide aide to other allaid countries. This plan also allowed the help of the Soviet Union and its allies but they had to make political reform.
  • The Vietnam War

    This war was fought between North Korea, supported by communist allies like China, and South Korea, supported by the United States and other anti-communist nations. The war was about trying to stop communism from spreading.

    Mostly used in reference to the "easing" of the geo-political tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Mostly used to refrence the "thawing out" in the middle of the Cold War.

    Former President Jimmy Carter thought that instead of avoiding world affairs, the United States should be more involved in affairs that had anything to do with human rights violations.

    Four terrorist attacks by terrorist Osama Bin Laden and the terrorist group Al-Qaeda. The attacks destroyed the World Trade Center, and the Pentagon.

    This a millitaray campaign that started shortly after the 9/11 attack. It resulted in a global military campagn to eliminate Al-Qaeda and other organizations like it.

    Bush and other government officials created a plan to rid Afghanistan of Al-Qaeda terrorists and also get rid of those who harbored and/or assisted said terrorists.
  • War in Iraq

    This war fist started because the U.S. government said Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and they were going in to remove said weapons. No such weapons were found, then Saddam Hussein was removed from power.
